Horizontal Strata, Molded From Real Cliff Faces
The 48" x 24" Cliff Background brings the layered, horizontal strata of real basalt-style cliff faces from the California desert into a size built for larger freshwater aquascapes and terrarium setups housing more than one reptile. The deep relief creates natural ledges and hiding spots on one face, flip the panel over for a cave-effect layout instead.
Unlike our other colors, Cliff Series black is made from our straight polymer base rather than a crushed rock and sand mix, so there's zero color transfer to your hands. It's also highly scratch-resistant and easy to keep clean, whether that's a quick rinse or a stiff brush.
Technical Specs:
- Product: 48" x 24" Cliff Series background.
- Approx. Dimensions: 47.5" Long x 23.5" High x 2"–7" Deep.
- Weight: Approximately 11 lbs.
- Color: Black (polymer finish, no crushed rock/sand mix).
- Recommended Use: Larger freshwater aquascapes and multi-reptile terrarium setups.
- Material: Non-toxic, safe for direct contact with aquatic and terrestrial livestock.
- Reversible Design: Mount one way for basking ledges and climbing terrain, flip it for cave-like shadowing and fish hiding spots.
- Freshwater Safe: Great for cichlids, schooling fish, discus, and planted freshwater tanks.
- Reptile Safe: Works as a basking and climbing backdrop for bearded dragons, snakes, and geckos.
- Built-In Ledges: The horizontal strata create natural hiding spots and basking shelves, with more surface area than our 36" x 24" size for multi-animal setups.
- Black Finish: Makes fish coloration and reptile scale patterns stand out.
- Non-Toxic Materials: Safe for direct contact with aquatic and terrestrial livestock.
- Easy to Clean: Highly scratch-resistant, a stiff nylon brush (or even a handheld brass or steel wire brush) is all it takes.
- Plug-and-Play Fit: Sized for larger aquascapes and multi-reptile terrarium setups.
- Ships Rolled or Folded: Makes it easier to maneuver into tanks with or without center braces. If it arrives tied, untie it slowly rather than all at once, so it doesn't snap open around your animals or the enclosure glass.
- Secure with Silicone: We recommend 100% silicone along the back edges for a secure hold. Clip-mounting works better on our thinner background styles; Cliff Series' deeper relief holds best with silicone.
- Trim as Needed: Cut to fit around filters, heaters, or enclosure equipment with a kitchen boning knife, oscillating power tool, hand saw, Dremel, or hole saw.
- Flip for a Different Look: Use one side for basking ledges, flip it for a cave-effect hide layout.
- Order a Sample First: Not sure about the texture or fit? Order a sample before committing to the full size.
- If It Arrives Bent: Lay it flat in direct sunlight (or use another heat source) to relax it back into shape before mounting.
- Attaching: Secure with 100% silicone along the back edges, no full-panel adhesive needed.
- Cleaning: Rinse with water, or use a stiff nylon brush for anything more stubborn. Remove the background before using medicines like Methylene Blue, which can stain it.
- New Tank Note: A bit of cloudiness in the days after adding new décor is normal in freshwater tanks and should clear within about 2 weeks. Stick to smaller water changes (around 50% every 7 days, or 25% every 3) rather than trying to rush it, and hold off adding fish until an uncycled tank finishes cycling.
- Reptile Enclosures: Rated to withstand direct heat up to 200°F. Keep any heat lamp or element that could exceed that from touching the background directly.
- Waterproof Terrariums: The background can be drilled to add a small pump-driven waterfall, add moss for extra effect.
- Color Note: Because black uses our straight polymer base rather than a crushed rock/sand mix, it's more difficult to paint or recolor later if you change your setup.
